The Meal Bowl, Reinvented

Updated: Dec 19, 2023

The meal bowl is an industry veteran, the wheel of the takeaway order if you will. It follows a simple formula that is the bread and butter of the food and beverage packaging industry – plastics. The typical meal bowl is made from PET and PP plastics, unlikely to be recycled after its single use.

But it doesn’t have to be so.

Meal Bowl Packaging: A Shakey Wheel

As much as it devastated many other industries, the COVID-19 pandemic created the perfect conditions for the packaged food and beverage industry to boom. American frozen foods alone recorded a 21% increase in annual sales, amounting to $65.1 billion in 2020. As demand soared, cloud kitchens, meal box services, and delivery chains stepped in to capitalise on this new essential.

And along for this ride were the F&B plastic packaging manufacturers. In the EU, plastic packaging waste was up by 3.9% in 2021; that may not sound like much but it represents an increase of 598 thousand tonnes from 2020. Unfortunately, recycling these plastics is currently neither as easy nor as profitable as sustainable businesses would hope. Under 10% of the plastic used around the world is actually recycled. Unwittingly, the pandemic take-out surge created a plastic landfill surge.

We’re looking at 158 million tonnes of plastic waste accumulated in global landfills and waterbodies by the end of 2023. Under such circumstances, the industry has an imperative to rethink packaging like the single-use meal bowl.

This wheel is past its time. So we reinvented it.

A Step Ahead of the Market

Unlike regular single-use plastic meal bowls, molded fibre Meal Bowls won’t sit in landfills for centuries. Made from sugarcane bagasse, they’re both home-compostable as well as recyclable in the paper stream, making them the most sustainable alternative to the original.

But sustainable solutions are meaningless without functionality. Which is why the Cirkla Meal Bowl has been put through a rigorous design process that is beyond the average F&B packaging solution. The bowls are spill-proof, easy to denest, microwave-safe, freezer-safe, oil-resistant, and film-sealable – at par with their plastic counterparts in keeping food fresh and avoiding leakages.

Available in customised shapes and complete with a business’s embossed logo, the bowls are preferred by customers for their smooth and natural finish over the synthetic feel of plastic. FDA-compliant and PFAS-free, they make ideal take-out and frozen meal containers. This versatility gives them the edge in both retail and wholesale operations.

Sleek, sustainable, and safe for business’s bottom lines – sometimes it pays to reinvent the wheel.
